A wee tale for the newsletter

“Playing recently at Forrester Park Golf Club our Past Seniors' Captain Graeme Cockburn recorded his fourth Hole in One at the 14th Hole.

Playing in a "friendly" fourball with good friends Les Fargie, Tom Swarbrick and Jim Honeyman, Graeme, first on the tee, hit a majestic 5 iron ( his words!)to this slightly uphill 175 yard Par 3.

It was clear to all that the ball had gone in but after the congratulatory hugs, handshakes and good wishes it dawned on Tom and Jim that they had just lost the hole without even hitting a shot - Graeme had a stroke on this hole, so net 0 and 2 down!

Despite this setback and with some fine play from Tom the fightback started and a Gentleman's Match was finally recorded.

Everyone was driving home so there were no wild celebrations in the Clubhouse but Forrester Park did acknowledge the occasion and Graeme was presented with a box of balls.

Congratulations to Graeme.”

Midland Alliance Success

Last week Club Captain Brian McSkimming, Gill Muir and Jacky Henderson joined me in a successful venture on our home course at Ladybank, in the Midland Golfers Alliance. Thanks to the guys for their great company and for some very good golf too..

Handicap Winter League

Ladybank 3 Charleton 1

The handicap winter league team played the first round of fixtures on Sunday 14th October.

The results were:

1 - Craig Mathie & Colin Bennett - Won 5&3

2 - Steve Hutcheon & Graeme Lennie - Won 2up

3 - Mark Johnston & Brian McSkimming - Won 6&5

4 - Fergus Johnstone & Mark Dodds - Lost 4&2

A great comeback by Steve Hutcheon and Graeme Lennie to win 2up from 3 down after 9 holes.

Thanks to the greenkeeping staff, the course was in great condition after the heavy rain on Saturday.

The teams next match is at Ladybank against Leven Thistle on Sunday 28th October.

An ace week for Master Eddie

The British Masters took place at Walton Heath in Surrey last week and was hosted by the local favourite, Justin Rose. The tournament had a stark weather contrast from start to finish with conditions declining and making it a real grind for the players. The caddies were certainly tested during the final round trying to keep their players warm and dry. It was a day of umbrellas, waterproofs and wearing the correct layering, which at this time of year can help or hinder your round.

The tournament winner was Eddie Pepperell who dealt with the conditions the best and led from start to finish to claim a two shot victory. Eddie’s highlight of the week was his impressive hole in one on Thursday at the ninth hole, earning £20,000 for charity and a celebratory bottle of wine from the tournament host. Pepperell now moves up to 33rd in the world rankings and with it an invite to next year’s biggest tournaments including his first trip to The Masters at Augusta.
