Michael Hebron Coaching Seminar - Wednesday, 5 September

Michael was inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame in 2013. He was the 1991 PGA National Teacher of the Year and the 1990 National Horton Smith Award recipient for his contributions to PGA of Americas education programs.

The first PGA of America Teaching and Coaching Summit, Dallas Tx. 1988 was his idea. He also organized the first European PGA AND Canadian PGA Teaching and Coaching Summits.

Michael Hebron has received over 25 awards. He has been invited to do education seminars in India, Australia, Canada, Finland, Chile, Japan, Costa Rica, England, Ireland, France, Italy, Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Spain, Denmark,Korea , Iceland . Has been invited to organizations, businesses, Yale, MIT and other colleges, universities and school districts throughout the United States to speak on the topic of learning.

If he had a choice, Michael has said would like to be known for how he delivers information to students rather than who the students he has spent time with are. Michael’s preference is to pass on the value of playful, student-centered/brain compatible approaches to learning, which supports learning anything, both information and motor skills to golfers at every level of the game. Michael refers to this as LEARNING POSITIVE GOLF. He has coached winners on the PGA, LPGA, EUROPEAN TOURS, Ryder Cup, Walker Cup players, a MASTERS, a US OPEN and a PGA champion, but enjoys his time with club golfers the most.

Every year over 800 youth golfers take part in the programs offered at his Club, Smithtown Landing. Five high school golf teams also train and play their matches there.

Wednesday, 5 September: 9.30 - 4pm

Members, Guests and returning PGA Professionals/Assistants

The morning session will be indoors, where Michael will talk through and demonstrate key aspects to improve your golf. He will cover all areas of the game and you will come out of this session much clearer in how to improve your approach to golf. Michael aims to increase your understanding on how you learn best and will give you simple, effective techniques to use on your golf game.

12.30-1.30 Lunch will be provided - Soup and Sandwiches of your liking on thick crusty bread.

Our afternoon will be spent out doors on Ladybank’s exclusive private members practice area. Michael will coach several different ability level players within the group explaining his reasoning behind decisions made during the coaching sessions.He will finish off by taking as many questions as possible.

I've only ever managed one as a fifteen year old lad at a wet and windy Nairn Dunbar on what I think was the 15th hole back then with my three wood!!! I think one of our past captains is in double figures?

A Successful Fitting

We had some serious yardage and height gain from member Ali Law after our Titleist fitting last week.

Titleist AP1, Nippon NS Pro reg shafts 5-P&W were giving the added distance and Vokey SM7 wedges 54/60 mid bounce for some great feel and control around the greens.

Big swing improvements too. Well done Ali.

Titleist Ball Fitting Day

Friday 15th June sees us host a Titleist ball fitting session for our members from 10am-5pm. This really is a brilliant opportunity to understand which ball can work best for you. I would highly recommend coming along to this, as there is no obligation to buy anything and the importance of the golf ball can be lost on many people. I see many golfers using 'just what I have in my bag' or 'something I found on the course' or 'I like the soft ones' or 'I only play ProV1.' These are many of the lines that we hear regularly in the Pro Shop. The ball at the end of the day is the one consistent thing in the whole golf equation. The clubs you play are all different, the courses can be different, the weather can be different. So, give yourself the best chance and play consistently the same ball that suits you and your game.

Fife County Ladies Team News

Inter county matches held at Dunbar GC from 25th - 27th June feature three Ladybank ladies in the team of 8 players. The three ladies selected to play are Susan Jackson, Jocelyn Mackie and Hannah Braidwood who is making her county debut. Captaining the team is Lorna Bennet and her Vice-Captain is Elsie Hutcheon. Well done to all concerned and best of luck.

Ryder Cup hopefuls staking their claim

The final leaderboard at last week’s Italian Open made for interesting reading. Home favourite Francesco Molinari was attempting back-to-back victories after his previous week’s triumph at Wentworth but had to settle for second place, one behind Thorbjørn Olesen who captured his fifth European Tour title in the process. Both golfers will have their eyes firmly set on a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team come September as well as several top-10 finishers from the Italian Open such as Cabrera-Bello, Sullivan, Poulter and Willett.

Someone else looking to compete in Paris is young American Bryson DeChambeau who conjured up a timely victory at the Memorial Tournament. There were several stories at the beginning of the week including Justin Rose’s opportunity to rise to the top of the world rankings with a win (he finished T6) and Tiger Woods’ latest event of his eye-catching comeback (he led the field in several tee-to-green categories but faced putting woes throughout the week to end up six shots back), but DeChambeau stole the headlines with his playoff win to secure PGA title number two.

Fairway wood off the deck

Being able to launch your fairway wood off the ground is a great attribute to have, especially when it comes to reaching those long par-4s and short par-5s. However, we know some of you struggle with this shot, so here is a simple drill to help turn things around.

Swing shallow to launch it high
Fairway woods are long and low lofted, which makes them tricky to get airborne. Many amateurs we teach lean back through impact in an effort to lift the ball up, but this typically results in a low strike on the club face and a weak, low ball flight.

Instead, try to brush the turf in front of your ball through impact. This will encourage you to keep your chest down longer, which can help you find the centre of the face and launch shots higher in the air. If you’re struggling to achieve this shallow swing action, try placing a glove around six inches in front of your ball and swing towards it after impact, as above.

Personalise your launch
All of Callaway's current drivers feature the brand’s OptiFit adjustable hosel, which allows us to optimise your trajectory so you can launch it higher or lower, as well as choosing between a neutral or draw lie angle setting to try to improve your dispersion.

Shot shape control
On the GBB Epic we can utilise a 17g sliding weight that Callaway says can alter your flight by 21 yards from left-to-right to give you better accuracy, distance and control. So if your ball flight tends to be a fade to the right, we can move this weight to counteract this shot shape, helping you to find more fairways.

Don't outgrow your driver
If you’re planning on improving your technique and making swing changes, having an adjustable driver that you can alter to suit your new swing is much cheaper than forking out for a new model.
