Greenkeepers news

As we enter into October this week we have had some glorious sunshine on offer along with dense fog- you can certainly feel the chill in the mornings with frost in the longer grasses last week. September in general was typical of most months this year, dry overall with some short sharp showers- a total of 54mm rainfall fell. One thing that has been noticeable is the increased humidity which has consistently been above 90% for the last fortnight or so, there are a number of effects that humidity has on the course.

Firstly I'm sure anyone who has played recently will notice the heavy dew which lingers around most of the day and then comes down again in the evening. This has a knock on effect in terms of moisture retention on the surface, which in turn can make greens damper and a little softer. When the surface sits moist it's a perfect environment for fungi to develop, so we are always on our guard and monitoring any disease activity during these periods.

One other main issue is pitchmarks.

It is disappointing for us during maintenance to discover so many unrepaired or poorly repaired pitchmarks on greens. Can everyone please ensure that they repair not just their own, but if they see any others whilst on a green, thank you.

A couple of years ago I started a little project to try and get our neglected old 8th green back to a suitable standard and produce something consistent with our 18 greens on the course. The green itself was in need of attention, but it had a relatively good sward, was of suitable construction and had ready made bunkers to suit a nice short game area.

After some harsh renovation and extra maintenance, the green has come on leaps and bounds and is now an excellent putting surface. The area in question is now mowed and rolled on a daily basis and receives the same nutritional programme as all other greens.

It has 2 bunkers, a fully maintained approach and it is a great addition to our practice facilities.

What it lacks is use! Not a lot of members use this area, I'm sure those who do use it think its their little secret and love it, but I'd much rather see others utilising this great area not only for their own benefit but also the added foot traffic on the surface will keep any excess moss at bay!
