Head Greenkeepers Blog - Tuesday, 1 September

September 1st already… summer is almost gone however some forecasters are predicting an Indian summer mid - late September with high pressure pushing in. The latter part of August followed the trend of most months this year with some very heavy downpours, notably Monday this week where 10mm fell in under half an hour - the course remained open and the greens drained remarkably well, a testament to the work carried out over recent years on our heathland terrain. Rainfall figures for the month were almost back to an acceptable level of 66mm… half of the July total…but still caused several parkland courses to close due to waterlogging! 

On the back what has been a very humid period and as we approach the autumn we are constantly monitoring moisture levels in greens. 

Last week we started an experiment to identify how different conditions affect the levels of moisture and how quickly water passes through the profile. We will test all greens each Wednesday from 6am for 3 weeks, noting weather conditions and any recent rainfall then compare the data. The results from our first test were very encouraging in our quest to produce consistency. We tested 19 greens and all the averages came within 5% of each other and all greens fell within our target. 

We are always keen to keep up with the latest advances in technology whether it's fertilisers, chemicals or machinery. This week we are demonstrating the latest greens mower from John Deere. This machine uses the increasingly popular hybrid technology, which replaces the hydraulically powered motors with electric. This pretty much eliminates one of greenkeepers worst nightmares the dreaded hydraulic oil burst! 

Another plus point is that it allows the machine to work at lower RPM without compromising quality of cut, which makes it a lot quieter and reduces fuel costs. 

Sustainability is a hot topic in golf at the moment and it can only be a good thing to reduce emissions, fuel usage and be more environmentally friendly.
