Rules news

R&A rules summary for 2019

There has been some considerable updating of rules for 2019. Here’s hoping these go a part way to speeding up the game for our members and guests.

Whilst also encouraging people back into the sport and for new golfers to start playing the game. Great credit must go to Martin Slumbers and the team at the R&A for taking this brave and much needed step.

Preferred lies

Now that the clocks have gone back and we find ourselves edging towards winter, many golf courses will have introduced a Local Rule for 'Preferred Lies'.

When this is in force, it allows you to mark, clean (especially important if your ball is covered in mud like in this photo) and place your ball within six inches of where it has come to rest, providing it was on a closely mown area - i.e. the fairway.

If you're unsure on this or any other rule, please come and speak to a member of the pro shop team.

Where the Fun Never Stops

As we move into Winter Hours at the Golf Club we hope to still see so many of you at one or more of our planned culinary evenings this fall.

We have kept it simple as you will see by offering one event each week. We will be open daily from 10.30am to 4pm.

At weekends, subject to bookings we are open for evening dining on Friday, Saturday and Sundays as the club is open until 11pm both Friday and Saturday nights and on Sunday until 8pm. On Tuesday 27th November the club will be open in the evening for our Monthly Supper Club. Asian Theme.

An all-American affair

Xander Schauffele showed U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk exactly what he was missing at Le Golf National, as he pulled off a stunning play-off victory at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai. Schauffele clawed back a three-shot deficit to fellow American Tony Finau, making birdies on the final two holes to force a play-off, before making another birdie at the first sudden-death hole to win his third PGA title. Schauffele was named 'Rookie of the Year' in the 2016-17 season, and is proving his credentials once again this year, despite switching equipment manufacturers at the start of the season.

What do you take from this?

As golfers, there's nothing more satisfying than a shot which is perfectly executed - even if it is a rare occurrence for many of us. It could be a booming drive which splits the fairway down the middle, or maybe a wedge shot which stops dead, two feet away from the hole. In fact, when you consider how often we use our wedges during a round of golf - see the graph below - the latter is something that we should all be striving to achieve.

So, what do you take from the graph above? In our eyes, it highlights just how important your short game is. We see a lot of you spending time hitting balls on the range, which is great, but don't neglect the less glamorous side of the game when practising - it's where your score is 'made'.
