Head Greenkeepers Blog - Wednesday, 21 September
Welcome back to my Blog following my summer holiday. I returned to a very much autumnal feel with chillier mornings, old pine needles shedding and the birch leaves have started to wilt too.
Before I left we hosted the Bigga Scottish Championships with a capacity of 90 greenkeepers entering the flagship event of the season. It was a great opportunity for us to showcase our course and club and it was great to have so much complimentary feedback with regards to both.
Players from as far north as Tain GC competed and the winning score was an impressive level par 71 from Chris Prior form Bearsden GC.
With the midweek medals and ladies Monday competitions now finished for the season this gave us an opportunity to relieve the greens of any stress or tension by doing a pencil tine followed by a top dress the next day.
Careful planning and organisation assures as little disruption to play as possible and surfaces are back to normal in no time at all. We managed to get 17 of our 20 greens solid tined and rolled on Monday and the rest completed by 8am Tuesday morning, which then allowed all top dressing to be completed and brushed in by 10:30am Tuesday.
Autumn greens maintenance is our next focus, but not for another few weeks yet. Once we have a start date confirmed there will be a notice posted outlining our plans.
To help us decide what our maintenance will consist of, firstly we need to find out what our Organic matter percentage is.
A fortnight ago we took samples from our 3 data greens which were sent away to the lab for testing. These results will be with us next week when we have our autumn visit from the STRI in line with the objective testing programme.
We managed to apply the same quantity of sand during autumn maintenance in 2015 as previous years but with a different strategy as we felt 4 years of Graden work had been very effective. We are confident there's not been a substantial rise in OM % due to ongoing top dressing, and after the season starting off very wet it has evened itself out now with annual rainfall currently 594mm. More information will be available following next week's visit and results.
This week we will be commencing stage 1 of our rough management plan which will see us initially cut & collect our managed roughs around the course. Once this is complete stage 2 will then consist of tackling the deeper unmanaged roughs. When we cut & collect the clippings it is essentially removing the food source and encouraging a thinner, wispier sward to develop. This will be an ongoing plan, but already after doing some areas last winter we can already see an improvement. Also included within the rough management plan we will be strimming and collecting the long grass around our new bunkers on 1, 2 & 5 to refine the sward.
Weather outlook is looking a little unsettled and windy towards the weekend and into next week; however we will still hold onto some warm weather with temperatures reaching the high teens.
